Spatial Development Initiatives

Spatial development initiatives are certain areas in which the government invests money to improve the people who live there’s economic and infrastructural situation.  SDIs are centered on the areas with the highest unemployment and poverty rates. These areas are usually very large. It is primarily aimed at a series of undeveloped areas of our country. After apartheid ended the old homeland areas were left poor and undeveloped and many SDIs include these old homeland areas.

To do this the government and private companies wok hand in hand to create jobs within these companies. Often these companies have to do with the tourism industry which has a lot of job creating potential. It also improves manufacturing infrastructure which creates a lot of semi-skilled jobs. Building all this infrastructure requires many unskilled workers which will create jobs for a while to come.
